The thing Inge has awoken is a beast created by the Old Ones, extraterrestrial beings of enormous intellect and scientific talent, who arrived on Earth billions of years ago. They created life on the then barren planet and twisted it to suit their own purposes. This creature is one of their early attempts to create a servitor race, the things later known as shoggoths. These proto- shoggoths were not genetically predisposed to hynoptic control like their descendants so the Old Ones were forced to use coercion in order to control them. This made the proto- shoggoths ever more rebellious and malignant. Eventually the Old Ones were forced to terminate the project and exterminate these monsters. Only a few escaped, lurking deep underground to escape their former masters.

Every once in a while some come to the surface, summoned by strange spells, such as the one Inge had chanted moments before her murderous stepsister was seized. Magda is still enraged, not realizing the danger she is in, and kicks at the monster, trying to get it to release her.
Proto- shoggoths are not composed of a protoplasmic mass like the later shoggoths were. Instead they were complied from existing genetic material- some terrestrial, some alien- by the Old Ones.
The proto- shoggoth here is preparing to feed. From the center of the whirling mass of tentacles a mouth tube appears. It coils back preparing to strike at the prey.
